WHAT IS WILDLIFE AID BRIGADEtm?

Wildlife Aid Brigade is an initiative created by Sue Lunson Farinato to protect wild animals and their families.  Trained volunteers respond from animal shelters to calls regarding injured, ill or possibly orphaned wild animals, including mammals, birds and reptiles.  The volunteer travels to the site and determines the species of the animal, the age and health of the animal, and whether it actually needs help.  The volunteer also transports the animal to a nearby shelter if necessary.  The caller is informed about the natural history of the species, and the volunteer addresses any public health or safety concerns.

The goal of Wildlife Aid Brigade is to keep wildlife families together, particularly when human-caused disruption of wildlife homes has occurred.  By using techniques such as recreating a nest which has been destroyed but left the young unharmed, wild adult animals are given another chance to raise their own young.

Sue L. Farinato is a wildlife rehabilitator based in Maryland.  She has served on the Wildlife Subcommittee of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments for four years.

Wildlife Aid Brigade currently operates in the Metropolitan Washington DC area.
